Hip-hop is constantly criticized whenever anything negative is associated with it, so it should be noted when the Hip-Hop community takes a stance like it will this weekend. On Saturday, April 7 at 7:00pm, Jay-Z and others will join Russell Simmons and the Rev. Al Sharpton in a “Stop The Violence” rally in Trenton, New Jersey. Rappers Ludacris and Chuck D. will also be a part of the event by delivering taped messages.
The rally is in direct response to the news that a 7-year old girl was gang-raped by seven men, ranging in ages 13 – 20, and sold by her 15-year old sister for sex on March 28th. Police have already arrested five men who they believe are guilty and are looking for two others.
It’s been a minute since the hip-hop community spoke out against violence, and it’s unfortunate that it had to take such a horrific crime to see hip-hop artists react and come together again. But it’s good to know that when things do happen, there are still those in the community who care enough to want to help.
The rally will take place at the Lighthouse Outreach ministry in Trenton, New Jersey. The public can pick up tickets there (note: it will probably be one of the few times anyone will be able to see Jay-Z for free).
